SUNK AND STRANDED: How Two Women Saved their Sunken Boat on a Remote Atoll in Papua New Guinea”
The unthinkable—your sailboat hits a reef and sinks on a remote island. Is this the end of your dream? What can you do and how do you do it?
In 2002, our 34 ft. sailboat hit a reef on a primitive island in Papua New Guinea and sank in five minutes. Four days later, with both help and hindrance from the villagers we managed to patch the hull, kedge her off the reef and refloat her. We were then stranded on the island for over three months while we resurrected our badly damaged boat so she could sail the 300 mile stormy ocean passage to safety on the north coast of PNG. Our seminars highlight our experiences with a how to approach. They demonstrate what two women alone can do when faced with daunting physical and cultural challenge in a remote part of the world. The book on our impossible but true story, from the sinking, refloating and extricating Banshee from Hermit Island to finally reaching Madang describes in detail how we saved our boat. See these chapters in the book for the details of what we did:
